It's very sad to inform you all that Sir Edmund Hillary has passed away yesterday. This great soul has done wonderful things for Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet. I personally met him in 1992 when I was an editor at the Kathmandu Post.
The amazing thing about this great soul is that people around the world remember him more than his country. Many people don't know that Hillary was from New Zealand but they definitely know that he was the first to set his feet on the top of Mount Everest, with the help of his great Nepali Sherpa friend, Tenzing.
Hillary devoted his entire life to uplift Sherpa and other people's lifestyle in the remote Himalayan mountains of Nepal. In 2003, he was awarded with an honorary citizen of Nepal. There are very few people in this planet who cross national boundary and go somewhere else where their service is much needed. I think Mother Teresa did the same by leaving her native country of Romania and settling down in slums of Calcutta, India.
Remember, helping yourself is good but nothing like help others selflessly. Salute to those great souls.
